Biodiversity at Tōmoana

Tōmoana Showgrounds is more than an event venue — it is a living landscape. With 40 hectares (100 acres) of green space at the heart of Hastings, we have both the privilege and responsibility of caring for a significant urban ecosystem that is enjoyed by our community year-round.

A Unique Natural Setting

Our Biodiversity Commitment

A Place to Learn and Connect

Running through the centre of the Showgrounds is the Ruahapia Stream, a natural waterway that connects our land to the wider catchment and surrounding environment. Alongside it sits Lake Waikoko, a defining feature of the grounds and an important habitat for birdlife and native species.

With 528 established trees across the site, these natural assets provide shade, shelter, biodiversity corridors, and green space for people to gather, relax, and learn.

Being located on the doorstep of Hastings means our environmental practices matter — not just for the Showgrounds, but for the wider community and future generations.

We are committed to actively protecting, restoring, and enhancing the natural environment of Tōmoana Showgrounds. Our approach focuses on long-term sustainability, resilience, and education.

Our work includes:

Planting & Regeneration

  • Ongoing native and specimen tree planting programmes

  • Replacement of trees lost to severe weather events

  • Enhancing shade, biodiversity, and landscape resilience

Waterway Care

  • Regular Ruahapāi Stream clean-ups

  • Protecting water quality and stream health

  • Riparian planting to stabilise banks and improve habitat

Pest & Weed Control

  • Targeted pest management to protect native flora and fauna

  • Weed control programmes to support healthy ecosystems

Waste Minimisation

  • Waste reduction and recycling practices across events and operations

  • Working with event organisers to minimise environmental impact

  • Promoting responsible waste behaviour on site

Soil Health & Land Care

  • Soil testing and monitoring

  • Sustainable land management practices

  • Ground care to protect turf, pastures, and green spaces

As a highly visible green space within an urban environment, Tōmoana Showgrounds plays an important role in helping people connect with nature. Our biodiversity work supports not only ecological health, but also education, wellbeing, and community connection.

Whether it’s visitors enjoying the shade of mature trees, children learning about waterways, or volunteers helping with planting days, Tōmoana is a place where people and nature coexist.
